Thank you! You too :)
I need your notes for the Week 10 Bible passage (Philippians 4:10-20) by Saturday!
Go here to submit.
14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. 18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (NIV)
Here’s what Nicole wrote:
I believe this passage talks about the power of love. The first part tells us the we can’t be anything without love even if we are capable of other things. Without love, whatever else we do wouldn’t really matter. I also think that it tells us that with love we wouldn’t need prophecies, tongues, or knowledge, because love provides us with so much more.
I do agree with this. Most people think of 1 Corinthians 13 as the “Love Chapter”. It is speaking about love, but there it is also tackling the issue of the gift of tongues and if their still relevant for today. Before this, in chapter 12, Paul is listing the gifts God gives His believers and how they should be used in the church. He streams right into chapter 13, and after he describes the characteristics of love, he starts telling the church in Corinth when spiritual gifts will cease. The key verse is “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” While it is still difficult to say with ABSOLUTE certainty what this verse is saying, it is a reasonable to guess that when he says “See face to face” he is referring to Christ’s return. A reflection in a mirror is not the actual person, but face to face is. We do not physically see God now, but when He returns we will. Secondly, knowledge. Paul only knows some now, but eventually will know all. We will not know “fully” until we have our eyes opened by God. We do not understand completely everything, but in time we will.
This chapter is powerful in terms of love and the discussion of tongues.

“‘No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the LORD.” Leviticus 18:6 clearly says that incest is wrong. In the New Testament, family incest is not directly approached. Homosexuality is, but incest isn’t as much. However, the 7th commandment is “Thou shalt not commit adultery”. Adultery is lusting after ANY woman not your wife, either in actions or thoughts. in James 2:10 it says “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” Therefore, if you have any sexual visions or things not for your wife, it’s a sin.
If you think that isn’t quite enough, then look at incest examples in the bible and what happened to them. The most common is Amnon and Tamar. This story can be found in 2 Samuel 13. Read that and see. Just because it’s in the OT doesn’t mean it’s irrevelvant
1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Yeah, we can do that one next :) thanks for the suggestion!
